Most academic jobs have three major components: research, teaching, and service. While much of our graduate education and postdoctoral work focuses on performing high-level research, little is given to teaching and pedagogical training. Yet, we are expected to demonstrate high-impact teaching skills and have a Teaching Portfolio ready for job applications. This course will present fundamental concepts in designing and implementing STEM courses and developing undergraduate-level research programs. Topics covered will include cognitive hierarchies, adult learning styles, curriculum development, syllabus design, active learning strategies, and formative and summative assessment techniques. Students in the course will practice implementing many of the learning theories taught during the class with the final goal of developing a mock course syllabus, a lesson plan for one class, and a 15-minute teachable unit.
